The Donkey

Miniature Donkeys | Mammoth Jacks | Pygmy Domkeys
Andalusian & Maltese Donkeys | Catalonian Donkeys | Poitou Donkeys

Mammoth Jack Stock, also known as American Mammoth Jack Stock, may be called asses, and more correctly referred to as Jack Stock, Mammoth Jack Stock, or Mammoth Jacks and Jennets. It is not correct to refer to them as donkeys.

The size standards of American donkeys are as follows:

Not generally used for showing, the American Jack was used for breeding mules. Prior to the American Revolution, export of these animals was forbidden from Spain by its monarchy. The king of Spain did, however, send a gift of a grey Andalusian Jack and Jennet to General George Washington to aid in his interest in raising mules. Washington also received a Maltese Jack and several jennets from General Lafayette. thus the Spanish Maltese and Andalusian stock became the nucleus for the American Jack. Over the years, other European breeds were imported and bred with the American stock, so that today the American Jack is a composite of all, yet retains a uniform conformation.
