| maiden | a horse of either sex which to date has not won a race of any distance |

| maiden mare | a mare which has not had a foal, though she may be carrying one |
| maiden race | a race in which only horses which have never won a race may be entered |
| mane | the long hair growing on the top of a horse's head and down the neck |
| mane and tail comb | small long-toothed metal combs used for cleaning or pulling the mane and tail |
| mare | female equine animal; a female horse aged four years or over |
| martingale | a device used to help in keeping a horse's head in the correct position; i.e. prevents the horse from raising its head far enough to evade the bit

| mixed meeting | a race meeting at which both flat and steeplechase or hurdle races are held onthe same day |
| mixed stable | a racing stable where both flat races and National Hunt horses are kept |
| montura | (a) a riding horse; (b) a saddle |
| mount | (a) a horse used for riding; (b) to get up on the back of a horse |
| mount money | the money paid out in a rodeo ro a performer, who is riding, roping or bulldogging in exhibition but not in competition |
| muck out | to clean out a box or stall in which a horse has been stabled removing the droppings and soiled bedding |
| mudder | a racehorse which perfoms well on a muddy track |
| mud fever | an inflammation of the upper layer of skin, caused by subjection to muddy and wet conditions |
| music | the cry made by the hounds when they are hunting |
| mustang | a wild horse |
